And merriment too, that humankind might be perceived as a sideways turn in evolution (or even a degenerative one given our despoiling of a planet) rather than the summit of some tortuous uphill route to perfection. Are there creationists across the globe scratching their heads over the implications of this? Probably not. If they can so implacably close their minds to Darwinian revelation and the staggering evolutionary machine that has been rolling inexorably since the first stirrings of single-cell life, I guess that anything else is a flea on an behemoth's ass!
