Thanks for all the positive reactions! I know a couple of you celebrate the holiday, so I’m pleased that you liked my own contribution to the festivities.

Larry – Thanks for explaining why those shots worked. I just knew that they did (and was proud of myself for keeping the camera sufficiently still without a tripod). I like your word association.

Peter – Organ pipes! Yes.

Fred – When I was a teenager, I visited some of the greatest Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals of France and Spain with my family, following the old pilgrim road to Santiago de Compostela, and have looked askance at other pretenders to cathedral status ever since. An authentic cathedral must reproduce the effect of standing in a grove of really tall, old trees — they call them “cathedral groves” for a reason! A high-ceilinged wooden barn does kind of evoke that effect, I think — better than many modern churches.

I have always thought of churches, particularly cathederals as places that can focus the light of the world in one place in the moment in time when we are present. By this measure your barn qualifies. Beautiful post!

The chiaroscuro shots of the barn interior are particularly effective because the viewer can’t easily determine the shape or bounds of the space and necessarily must interpret the scene in abstract terms.

A very felicitous linkage of words, images, and external links, Dave!
