Robin Hood had a beard? I don't think I read that version!

Yeah, the interior structure of black walnuts is much more interesting than English walnuts, for sure.

I'm glad this rambling essay worked for you.

I read once that when either Friar Tuck or Little John had been arrested (I can't remember which), Robin Hood dyed his fair beard dark with the hulls of walnuts. With this disguise, he was able to enter town and make a daring rescue. This made sense to me and my brother as we stained our hands every fall the same way and your brothers did. Though, as you say, English walnuts are different. I like the way black walnut shell halves that have been picked clean by a squirrel look a bit like the face of a barn owl.

Thank you for the touching connections you traced between the Burmese and your own place.

Oh, yes, rotten tomatoes - can't forget those! No matter how assiduously we kept after the picking, there were always a few.

I don't know what you have in your supermarket, but the ordinary, thin-shelled walnut -- the English walnut -- is a very different critter.

As kids, we did the same this time of year with rotten tomatoes.

Are the walnuts I buy in the supermarket a different variety than the ones I've been yanking out of my pup's mouth the last few weeks? Silly that I don't know, huh?

I like this meandering that makes a shape. I suppose the shape would have to be something delicate but strong, lovely but grotesque--a web, maybe, where a touch makes the whole thing and its burdens tremble.
