Have you blogged about those oaks, Laura? If so, you could send the link along to next month's Festival of the Trees -- see http://festivalofthetrees.wordpress.com for details. (And if not, you still have a couple weeks until the deadline for submissions.) Anthropomorphic old trees are the best, aren't they?

I can't believe I missed this. There are a couple of huge oaks (white oaks?) in Tate, Georgia, not far from here, and there is a gargoyle-esque old man growing forth naturally from the trunk of one. This also got me to thinking about the disappearance of chestnut trees and something I heard about them reappearing. a student of mine a couple of years ago, a 14 year old girl, was obsessed with those trees and taught me so much about them. Thank you all for these images, thoughts, and all this information.

Thank you for linking to the summary of the lecture about the Sarajevo war and urban trees.
