Buzz

The furnace stops and I hear the refrigerator. The refrigerator cycles off and I hear the computer. I power down the computer, turn off the lights, and now I hear nothing but the buzz in my head…

This evening’s buzz was all about the Obamas. I didn’t watch. I was busy making something new: a blogsite devoted to videoetry called Moving Poems. Nothing fancy — just a place to put my growing collection of cool poetry videos from YouTube and other video-sharing sites, with minimal commentary. The very first video I posted was a clay-on-glass animation of the Emily Dickinson poem that begins,

I heard a Fly buzz – when I died –
The Stillness in the Room
Was like the Stillness in the Air –
Between the Heaves of Storm –

It’s only my 43rd birthday, though. I’m not dead yet! Not as long as I still hear that buzz…

  1. Belated wishes for your b’day. That’s a nice play on words for the name of the site. Good luck with it. The gif of the TV screen with static is very distracting in the sidebar though (at least for me)

  2. But surely there has always been a buzz about you.

Or perhaps merely the creative crackle attendant upon creating websites more frequently than anyone else updates one extant. Shades of Larry McMurtry, tossing off urban novels (Cadillac Jack, Desert Rose) while writing Lonesome Dove.

  3. Kurt – Thanks!

arvind – I appreciate the feedback. Unless I hear from a lot of people that the like the animated gif, maybe I’ll kill the animation.

JMartin – I’d like to think that’s comparable, but I’m afraid that the urge to make blogsites showcasing other people’s words is more similar to amassing books than to writing them.

  4. Happy birthday!

Um, I was intending to comment on the gif animation before I read the previous comments, and I guess I still will: this particular animation, placed where it is, sort of renews the promise of gif animations for me. I like it.
