These governments need to understand the strength of these new technologies, the appeal they have to this generation of students, and the speed at which they are developing. Great new web sites and technologies could run afoul of ill-considered or at least poorly written state and local policies.

Safety -- bullying by classmates as well as sexual predators both within and without the ranks of teachers -- should be the top concern, but not the sole concern. A legal maxim governments might keep in mind: "Hard cases make bad law."

Each of you gets a gold star for making it through this long essay. Thank you so much for your kind words.

Laura, wow! I subscribe to English Journal and enjoy every issue, but I'm not sure I can work up the academic tone I find there.

If I had ten thousand Twitter followers, I'd trade them in for you guys. You're with me when I write, and in a way I write to thank you.

You may have no interest in doing this, Peter, but I think a mainstream educational publication like the English Journal would welcome this article. It's such a wonderful idea, and I think that sort of exposure would allow more teachers to see and use it.

Great essay. Peter, you know what I think of your tweets: they're stupendous. You deserve ten thousand followers.

Some of the technical discussion of grammar went over my head (these were things I once knew), but I got the feel of the sentences.

First, to Peter, well done! A lovely essay on the sentence and on the teaching of the sentence.

Second, to Dave, yes, a series sounds like a wonderful idea. You are a lovely innovator.

Your opening sentence did the trick, though I'm inclined to read everything you write because you wrote it and it's bound to be good. I got a great deal of pleasure from reading this article and a nice refresher in grammar as well. I've loved twitter for the very reasons you cite. It helps create better writers. Lucky students, yours.
