Timbre

You build a life: plant a hedge
or a fence, shore up the stonework
that runs around the house. Under all
of this, what they call foundation
What is it that trembles the wood
when trucks and buses run over
the road? Before you wake
in the morning, before you fall
asleep: the sounds of your father
         shuffling through rooms, testing
doors and windows, checking the locks.
