Three Sketches

On the deck, before the rain,
two dun-colored birds. I open
the screen door to panic.

*

Pruned at the end of winter,
but now the branches of the fig
bend low to the grass again.

*

Kept indoors over a year,
the Buddha's hand: its leaves
whiten, unused to direct sun.
