The bird of the spirit

flies out of hollowed-

out bone, searching
for more than stray seed,

more than crumbs
of afterthought or

happenstance. All day
I've called to it to come

down from its restless sky,
but it isn't ready to stop

striking at broken bells
or pushing bits of stone

and straw into readable
shapes or words.
