Butterfly Tanka

It let us nurse it
indoors— too weak to move much
with a ragged wing,
unable to push itself
or its brilliant sails upright.

We fed it sugar
water and small pulp of fruit,
lined a tray with leaves.
One day, one night, not trembling.
Then sunlight. Then halting flight.
