But this wasn’t just any year: true to its inclusion of the number of the beast, 1666 saw continuing plague deaths, sea battles with the Dutch, the Great Fire, religious persecution and rebellions, and our diarist reveling in his growing power the way men always have, by becoming a full-on sexual predator. Such an interesting mirror for our own times.
