Whereby the body associates the action with pleasure or distress

Like talismans clutched close
under your blouse

                Morsels of bread that tumbled

like strange jewels to the ground
The body doesn't understand

               that moments of denial

might be followed by moments
when a gift might be given

              without need of explanation

or return
It learns to hold

            itself ready—

One palm closed
The other palm closed
