Autotomy

A gate swings shut
too suddenly. A window's
upper and lower sashes
cinch close. A stippled
blue shadow detaches from
the ceiling the way a leaf
falls. What is that twitch
like a whip or an eyelash
caught in a doorway? Finger-
glove of skin or colorless
sheath: up close, it pulses
still with the life that picked
itself up and bolted from
the incident of its near
extinguishing.
