Phenomenology of Randomness

A pot of dragon fern sits in indirect sunlight
from north-facing windows, yet it's the south-
facing tips that look scorched.
Did someone fall ill and die
in the interval between seed and flower?
Did someone fall in love before the last
flames were extinguished?
When you stand in front of a fire
pit, sometimes the front of your thighs
gets the most heat. Smoke and resin
smells burrow in the nest of your hair.
Driving past the gas station to pick up
ube lattes from a bakery, your husband
wonders aloud what movie it was
where a character described
the Exxon sign as two crosses.
When you look up into the night
sky, you could say light, diamond-
studded. You could say
sprockets or helical gears,
planetary gearbox with a central
sun and an outer ring.
