Pahiyas

In May, farmers teach their water
buffaloes to kneel.

Giants float through streets
alongside saints wreathed in flowers.

Rice wafers tongue
each window in a dozen colors.

Anyone could swoon,
with noon light on fire trees.

How devoutly we seek visions
in dry dust and scalloped shells.
