Write Hope Without Saying Hope

The dentist asks me to help

widen the opening of my mouth

with a pair of rubber pulls.

is blinking up at something too bright

or resting between breaths.

Yesterday, it made me happy

to know words still made my heart

race, my fingers turn the pages.
